Ratu Fijian Extra Aged 5Yr Spiced Rum

Ratu is the premium rum line of the Rum Co. of Fiji, distilled at the South Pacific Distillery in Lautoka, the only rum distillery on the island, which has been running since 1980 and also produces the Bati and Bounty rums. The name Ratu means chief in Fijian, and the range launched in 2016. This Extra Aged Spiced Rum starts with molasses rum made from Fiji's own sugar cane, aged for five years in used oak barriques in the island's tropical heat, then spiced and bottled at 40% ABV. Unlike spiced rums built on barely aged spirit, the five years of barrel time give it a real rum backbone. Falstaff magazine rated it 88 points in its 2023 Spirits Special and described a fairly citrusy nose of orange oil, clove and dried fruit over subtle chocolate and caramel, a sweetish palate that returns to the spice, and a medium-long finish. Drink it with ginger beer and lime, in a spiced Dark 'n' Stormy, over ice with a strip of orange peel, or in a hot toddy or mulled cider where the clove and orange carry through.
