Peerless Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. traces back to 1889 and the Taylor family's great-grandfather, and fourth-generation CEO Corky Taylor revived the name in a downtown distillery at 120 North 10th Street in Louisville's Bourbon District. The first Peerless bourbon in 102 years was released in June 2019, about four years old, and this straight bourbon carries on from that release. Peerless does a few things most Kentucky distillers don't. It uses a sweet mash rather than the industry-standard sour mash, meaning each fermentation starts fresh without backset carried over from the previous batch. The new make is double distilled to 107 proof and enters the barrel at that same low 107, so when it comes out it's bottled at barrel strength without any water added, and it's non-chill filtered. Paste Magazine's review found red fruit, cherry and plum on the nose with toffee and caramel corn, then a palate of cornbread, toasted wheat bread, honey, salted caramel, dark fruit, oak and cinnamon candy, calling it distinctly individualistic. A full-strength bourbon from one of Louisville's most interesting revivals.
